1943
Richard Ross senior traveled through San Clemente while serving in the United States Navy. It was just a small Spanish Village by the Sea at the time, population around 500, but Richard made a mental note to return to beautiful San Clemente CA.
1954
After a variety of successful business ventures, Richard Sr. and wife Alma along with their two sons, Richard and Dale, planted roots in San Clemente. In 1955, Richard Sr. built the building and opened the Second Hand Store in 1957 at 111 Calle De Los Molinos, in the area known today as the Los Molinos Business District.
In 1962 Alma and her sister Elsie opened a business called The Sleep Shop, where they sold mattresses and new furniture. This was located on El Camino Real at the top of Avenida Del Mar. After a few years The Sleep Shop was relocated next to the Second Hand Store at 109 Los Molinos.
1974
When Richard and Alma retired, their son Richard Jr. and his wife Nancy took over operation of the business, eventually expanding to include the building at 107 Los Molinos.
The employees were family… Richard’s brother Dale, and Richard & Nancy’s sons, John and Eric.
2000
When Richard and Nancy retired, Richard’s brother Dale and his wife Mary became owners. They kept it a family business by employing their nephews as well as Mary’s sister Helen, to serve their customers.
They continued to serve San Clemente and the surrounding area, while emphasizing the shops ability to help customers recycle their things and think globally while shopping locally.
2018
When Dale and Mary retired they passed on the business to their nephew Eric, and his wife Sophia, who are the 3rd generation! Expect to meet their children, Noah, Gavin and Jane as they continue the Ross Family tradition of making San Clemente a fun place to shop!
All the current Ross’ are striving to follow the family’s lead and vision for SC Furniture by providing quality, value, and excellent customer service each and every day!
2020
Looking back on 2020, the challenges of the pandemic called for adaptability, perseverance, and a deep reliance on the foundation built by the generations before us. As the third generation owners, it became a defining period — one that reinforced the responsibility of carrying the business forward.
That experience brought an understanding of what it meant to stay committed through uncertainty, and to continue nurturing our strong roots within the San Clemente.
Our customers, many of whom have been part of our story for generations, continued to show their support during that time. Their trust was a reminder that the business has always been rooted in relationships, community, and shared history.
2026
After more than 65 years of serving the San Clemente community, the Ross Family continued to evolve alongside the needs of our customers. While maintaining a curated selection of vintage finds, the offering expanded to include modern coastal furniture, thoughtfully selected decor, and a dedicated Sleep Shop featuring quality mattresses and foundations.
What began in 1957 as South Coast Furniture & Mattress has become SC Home Furnishings — a reflection of both our family history and San Clemente's next chapter.
